Pinspiration: Valentine's Day Edition

Valentine's Day was never a favorite holiday of mine growing up.  That all changed in 2007 with the birth of my first and only child bright and early on Valentine's Day.  Can I say best Valentine's gift ever??  Now I am slightly obsessed with crafting and decorating the house for my little Valentine.  Here are some of my favorite highlights from my I <3 Valentine's Day board over at Pinterest.

A Pinterest Challenge To Myself...

Pinterest...

I absolutely love that site for all of the creative ideas, pretty inspiration photos, and recipe ideas.  And since I have only 3500 or so ideas pinned, I thought I'd challenge myself to create, sew (well learn to sew), or cook at least one item each month for 2012.  I hope to share at least one project/recipe as I've tried them out.  Anyone care to join me?

So for the month of January, I am in full birthday party planning mode for my daughter.  This year she is turning FIVE!!! on Valentine's Day.  I asked her what she'd like to do for her birthday.  Her response was to "roll a ball."  So a bowling party it is.  I created a birthday party board on Pinterest for bowling party ideas such as invites, party favor bags, and decor.  I used ideas from two invites I found online to create my daughter's invites.

I liked the wording from this invite.  I decided to write it on black card stock I already owned with a white gel pen.

I used my circle cutter to cut out bowling balls from the card stock.  Then I used a hole punch to create the finger holes of the ball and another hole for ribbon.  The other invite I used as inspiration shows a bowling ball covering a pin and connected with a ribbon bow.

I decided not to cut the actual invitation into a bowling pin shape.  It was just easier that way and maybe a little bit lazy.  :)  The bowling ball slides away to reveal all of the important party info.  Taylor's favorite color right now is pink. I choose a hot pink colored font for the invite and used a matching sheer ribbon to tie it all together.  I found pink envelopes at Michaels and finished the invites off with gold inked addresses and heart stickers.  Side note:  The holes on this invite are wonky and this particular invite was not used.

Next on the agenda is designing the party favor bags.  I am working on making Hello Kitty "Thank you for celebrating with me" tags for the bags.  And I know they will have more pink ribbons.  I may even attach a another bowling ball similar to this idea:

I am also going to attempt to make Hello Kitty cupcake toppers using Photoshop and card stock.  I'll include pics after the party.

High Five For Friday

Photobucket

This will pretty much be a High Five For Friday food edition as food as made me quite happy this week!

1.  Monday night I had the pleasure of having dinner with my parents while my husband took our daughter to a Florida Panthers hockey game.  They wanted to take me to a newish burger place called Chucks Burger Joint. I ordered the Chuck burger with cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato.  Their special sauce is akin to Thousand Island dressing.  The bun was perfectly toasted.  This burger was delicious and I can't wait to go back when I am in town for a visit again.

2. Free Chick-Fil-A chicken minis for breakfast every Wednesday in the month of January (at least at my local location.)  Need I say more?

3.  Favorite snacks:  Smartfood White Cheddar popcorn and Coke!

4.  Sushi night with the family!  Shrimp tempura rolls are my favorite.  We also shared a spring roll and coconut shrimp appetizer.

5.  On a non-food related issue, I have begun planning my daughter's 5th!! birthday party for next month.  She wants a bowling party.  I have been working on making the invitations the last couple of days.

What are your favorite highlights from the week?

2/52: Open

This week's entry for Paint the Moon's 52 Photo Challenge:

2/52: Open

This week's theme is open.  This photo is of my friend Susanna piggy-backing my daughter towards the wide "open" ocean.  How lucky are we to spend a Friday afternoon at the beach in January?  I took this using the fish eye lens of an Olloclip attached to my iPhone 4.  I believe I used the Camera+ app to add a filter.

High Five For Friday

I'm joining Lauren's High Five for Friday series this week.  It is to highlight my five favorite things from the past week.

1.  I made some organization progress around the house this week.  I also placed an order from The Container Store for some new goodies to hold my makeup, hair accessories, and my flat iron, hair dryer and brush.

2.  A mini-date with hubby for a beer (him) and a margarita (me) while our daughter was next door at her dance class.

3.  Joining Paint The Moon's 52 week photo challenge.  I look forward to being inspired and growing my photography skills this upcoming year.

4.  Meeting our good friends (visiting from NC) for dinner at a restaurant along the water.  My blackened mahi mahi sandwich was so delish.

5.  Playing on the beach in January!!!  Need I say anything more?

52 Week Photography Project

Happy New Year!

I am definitely new to creative photography.  I bought my first DSLR in Sept and have been enjoying it so much.  There is so much to learn.  It is time to get my camera out of automatic mode.  In order to do that, I am going to need a lot of practice and inspiration.  I have been a big fan of Annie from Paint the Moon Photography. She is simply the sweetest, with two beautiful girls.  Annie is so helpful answering questions, giving hints, and offering free Photoshop actions and templates.  She also sells many fabulous action sets on her blog.  They definitely help to give your photos that extra oomph.  Annie is hosting a 52 Week Photo Challenge.  There is a new theme each week to keep us practicing and learning new techniques.  All you need to do is either add your photos to the Flickr group or to Annie's Paint the Moon Facebook page.  Please join us in this fun project and inspire me!

Here is my first submission:

1/52 Theme: Natural

This photo of my sister-in-law reading my nephew's favorite book to him was taken by the "natural" light of the Christmas tree last weekend.  I neglected to get my camera out this past week so here's to hoping this challenge motivates me to practice more often.
